About Donald Sutherland

Donald Sutherland, born in Saint John, New Brunswick, in 1935, stands as one of the most distinguished actors of his generation. With a career spanning an impressive seven decades, he has breathed life into a diverse array of captivating characters in a multitude of films and television productions.

Early life and ascent to stardom

Donald Sutherland graduated with degrees in both engineering and drama in 1958. His passion for acting led him to England, where he pursued further studies at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Before long, he found himself on the stages of esteemed theatre companies in Perth (Scotland), and London.

Iconic roles

Sutherland's career boasts an array of iconic roles that have left an enduring impact on film history. Fans remember him as Captain "Hawkeye" Pierce in the legendary M*A*S*H* (1970) series. His portrayal of the understated detective in Klute (1971) garnered critical acclaim, while his poignant performance as the grieving father in Ordinary People (1980) touched the hearts of audiences worldwide. An outspoken critic of the war in Vietnam, Sutherland starred opposite Jane Fonda in the anti-war documentary F.T.A. (1972). Further, Sutherland's embodiment of the villainous President Snow in The Hunger Games franchise (2012-2015) added a sinister depth to the character.

Despite achieving considerable international success, Donald Sutherland remains steadfastly proud of his Canadian heritage. He frequently returned to Canada to contribute to its cinematic landscape, earning accolades for his roles in films such as Act of the Heart (1970), Threshold (1981), and The Art of War (2000). He also had the privilege of collaborating with esteemed filmmakers like Federico Fellini and Nicolas Roeg.

Awards and honours

Sutherland has received numerous awards, including a Genie, an Emmy, two Golden Globes, and an Honorary Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

He received stars on both Canada's Walk of Fame in 2000 and the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2011. In 2019, he was named a Companion of the Order of Canada, while in 2012, he was designated a Commandeur of France's Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
