In 1875 when the postage rate to Great Britain was reduced, Canada had no 5-cent stamp to prepay the new rate. However, in 1868 when the first stamps for the Dominion of Canada were introduced, the security printers had prepared a die for the 5-cent denomination in the large format. As a temporary means of securing 5-cent stamps the Post Office Department authorized the printers to manufacture temporary stamps from this design. These were the first temporary or provisional postage stamps of the Dominion of Canada. Portrait of Her Majesty Queen Victoria from a medallion.
