About Stamp

Canada's new set of low value definitive postage stamps features Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the 8¢ value and gives recognition to our historical heritage through the portrayal of six former prime ministers on the 1¢ to 6¢ values. It is especially appropriate that a new stamp bearing portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II should be issued in 1973 as her two visits to Canada this year have focussed more attention than usual on our monarchy and have reminded us of our country's role in Commonwealth. It is also appropriate in that 1973 marks the 20th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's coronation on June 2, 1953. Traditionally proofs of stamps bearing portraits of the Queen have been sent to Buckingham Palace for Her Majesty's personal approval. On this occasion, however, the Queen was asked to give her approval during the June-July visit to Canada, a request to which she graciously agreed, and for the first time in our history approval was given on Canadian soil. The seven pen and ink line drawing character sketches in this series are the work of David Annesley.
