The eastern white pine adorns a new Canadian stamp. The eastern white pine spreads from southeastern Manitoba to Newfoundland. This tree often attains heights of 100 feet and diameters of three feet, but does even better in favourable conditions. The eastern white can survive in poor soils and dry sites. As early as the 17th century, the British navy recognized the tree's value for masts and spars. When the American revolution cut off supplies in that territory, the British turned to what is now Canada. Sadly, over-exploitation and wasteful harvesting methods have since decimated the species that gave the Canadian forest industry its start. The White Pine stamps is the work of Heather Cooper, Toronto artist and illustrator.
