Three new-rate medium-value definitives featuring large mammals indigenous to Canada were issued on December 28, 1990. As the last set in a series which was begun in 1987, these three stamps bring the total number in the series to 19 different stamps, not including some paper and perforation varieties. A new 63-cent stamp, second step of the domestic rate, depicts the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), found in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Bay of Fundy and along the Pacific Coast. It is the best known of the seven species of porpoises and the smallest cetacean, seldom exceeding two metres. Although very active, it is shy; generally avoiding boats and rarely leaping above the water. The stamps in this series were all designed by Brian Tsang of Toronto. All three designs are available in panes of 50 stamps, while the 46-cent and 80-cent denomination are also available in handy packs of five stamps.
