About Stamp

To commemorate the 100-year anniversary of golf in Canada, five new stamps will be issued on June 6, 1995. This year marks the centennial of both the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) and the Canadian Amateur Championship. The five different stamp designs in the 10-stamp booklet feature some of Canada's oldest and most prestigious golf courses, as well as Canadians who have made significant contributions to the game. Perhaps prompted by the success of the Algonqui Golf Club in nearby St. Andrews golfers in the Saint John, New Brunswick, area were anxious to establish their own club. Fred T. Short, returning home from New York in 1896, convinced some friends to organize the Saint John Golf Club and leased grazing fields of the Millidge farm in 1897. There was only enough room for a nine-hole course. In 1913, land was purchased at Riverside Heights and the club was renamed the Riverside Country Club. During the 1920s and 1930s, Riverside expanded to an 18-hole course under the direction of Scottish-American architect Donald Ross. In 1939, Riverside hosted the Canadian Open, the only ever held in the Maritimes.
