About Stamp

Canadian history is punctuated by influential politicians who changed the course of this country - those who fought to introduce social programs, reform discriminatory legislation and strengthen the economy of the provinces. This February, Canada Post will pay tribute to 10 such figures - those from across the country who made their mark and helped build our provinces.

Joseph Roberts Smallwood

Born in Gambo, Newfoundland in 1900, "Joey" Smallwood was instrumental in bringing Newfoundland into Confederation. After the World War II, two referenda were held to determine if Newfoundland should retain Commission Government, return to responsible government with Dominion status, or enter Confederation with Canada. After fierce debate with Smallwood as the champion of Confederation, Newfoundlanders chose the Canadian option. In 1949 the province entered Confederation with Joey Smallwood as their first provincial Premier - a position he held until 1971. Smallwood died in 1991.
